Sherwin P. Simmons
Sherwin Palmer Simmons, 1931-2006, graduated Columbia (bachelor’s and law degrees) and started practice in Tampa in 1956. In 1970, he helped found the firm then known as Trenam Simmons, now Trenam Kemker. Moving to Miami in 1994, he joined Steel, Hector & Davis, and moved in 2005 to Buchanan Ingersoll PC. Among many leadership positions, he was a member of the ABA’s Board of Governors, chair of the ABA’s Section of Taxation and the Florida Bar’s Section of Tax, and a Council member of the American Law Institute (a member of the ALI’s Standing Committee on Membership for nine years and as its chair for seven). Sherwin received numerous honors, including the ABA Section of Taxation Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and the Outstanding Tax Attorney in the State of Florida Award in 1982. Sherwin was devoted to his wife, Mary Anne, and his sons, Stephen and Sherwin II. Earlier, Sherwin suffered the loss of his 12 year old daughter, Leslie (known as Chips), in a car accident. I feel blessed to have been trained by him, to have worked with him, and to have been his friend.
