Mike has spent over 30 years working in the employee benefits field, both as a lawyer and a manager. Since 1986 he has practiced with Holland & Hart LLP, an intermountain regional firm with offices in seven western states (Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, New Mexico, Montana, and Wyoming). His practice emphasizes employee benefits litigation, representing employers, plan sponsors, and plan fiduciaries. His litigation experience has included both cases arising under ERISA, as well as non-ERISA governmental and church plans. Mike has defended over 400 cases in the federal courts in at least 10 states, involving pension, health, disability, life, and severance benefit plans. He has also been involved in numerous appeals in the Ninth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeal concerning ERISA issues. He has written and spoken extensively on employee benefits litigation issues. Mike is a past member of the Council of the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section, and remains active in the Section's leadership. Prior to joining Holland & Hart, he worked for seven years in human resources and benefits administration, including as Vice President of a division of a Fortune 100 company.
