Howard Shapiro is Co-Leader of the ERISA Complex Litigation Group at Jackson Lewis. Howard focuses his nationwide practice on the defense of large, sophisticated ERISA class actions, representing Defendant Plans, Fiduciaries, Employers, Directed Trustees, and other plan service providers. He previously was the Co-Chair of Proskauer's ERISA Litigation Practice Group and started and managed that firm’s New Orleans Office. He was a Charter Fellow of the American College Of Employee Benefits Counsel and an initial member of the College's Board of Governors. Howard served as President of the College from 2006-2008. He now serves as the College's Nomination Committee Chair. He has also been very active in the Section of Labor & Employment Law and served as Chair of that Section from August 2004-August 2005. He has also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the ABA, Chair of the ABA's Joint Committee On Employee Benefits, and is a past Management Co-Chair of the Labor Section's Employee Benefits Committee. Howard is also a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He is named by Chambers as a Band-One Attorney in ERISA Litigation Nationwide, and a Star Individual in Louisiana for ERISA practice; Chambers has described Howard as an “icon in the area” of ERISA litigation and a “terrific litigator.” He also has been listed by The National Law Journal as one of the Top 40 Benefits Lawyers in the country, and he has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 1997, where he is one of few lawyers listed in two separate categories: ERISA and Labor/Employment.
