I was a Founding Governor and Charter Fellow of the College. I came to the benefits arena in the late 1970’s, through Taft-Hartley plans and litigation. Pension plans were the world’s largest source of equity capital, and medical plans probably the largest source of hidden liabilities, so there had to be a practice. I joined the ABA Labor Section’s EBC in 1982 and, seduced by the heady mix of folks who spoke my language and could not stop interrupting one another, became its Co-Chair in 1991, and Chair of the JCEB in 1994. For 17 years – ending in 2005 – I worked on the Senior Board of Editors of BNA’s EMPLOYEE BENEFITS LAW treatise. I also served as an Employer member of the Council of the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law from 2001 to 2011. Through the College we have, finally, a forum for seasoned employee benefits practitioners of all types and stripes -- a different breed – to meet as a group. We’re thoughtful, we’re technical, we argue. The parties are sensational. Who’da thunk?
